I just came across your post while researching the same latin word on the internet. Do you have any idea where the tile came from? I found the exact same tile embedded on a structure, with other similar tiles with patterns and similar motif style on a very interesting structure in New Jersey.

I've had an old glazed brick tile in my possession for some years now, about
5" x 5", with a Latin (I presume) inscription done in raised letters around
a picture of a tower and a swan, both on water.

Can someone tell me what this means? Both the Latin and the picture?

Not sure which word you are referring to. If you read the whole thread though, I believe your answer is there. If not, give more details and I'm sure even the current denizens here will be able to answer.

It might be a good idea to start by trying to date the tile, either via
ceramics expertise of by dating the style of the lettering? That might limit
the field of search for the significance and associations.

: Yes, Mr. Hapke, I do believe you're right. Thank you very much! Do you
: have any idea if the tower/swan motif on water is the emblem of any
: particular city?

I'm sorry, but I have no idea if this motif is the emblem of any
particular city.
There is a bit of text about swans on the water from the bestiaries,
When the swan swims in a river, it holds its neck and head high, as a
proud man is led astray by transitory things and even glories at the
time in his temporary possessions.

I suspect your tile might be post-medieval, in which case emblem books
rather than bestiaries would be the place to look. I don't know of
any emblem books available on-line, though I've not searched Google.
This one is ringing a bell, but painfully faintly! I'm thinking Germany... or France... or Tarot cards... the Swans may indicate faithfulness and purity (as they mate for life), but then that tower - must look further!

I get a German echo, too, but not a specific place.

This tile was made at the Moravian Tile Works in Doylestown, PA. The earliest date would be in the latter half of the 19th century but it may have been made much more recently as this tike works is still producing tiles from old molds. The one I am looking at is clearly dated 1997 on the reverse. Moravian Tile works was founded by Henry Chapman Mercer.

Check Henry Chapman Mercer builder of the Moravian tile works in Doylestown PA. He has the tike in a 2 foot square in the ceiling in his sitting room at Fonthill.
