Bon Voyage, Paul, old friend.

I will always remember him, despite the fact I never met him in person.

It's downright weird to know someone for so long and never meet face to face, but such is modern life.

I hope Mr. Hines is doing well.

All the best,

Joseph

That's a bummer, though 88 is a pretty good run.

Indeed. It's great that he had a long, productive life. Should we be so lucky...

I'm reading his old posts and strikes me the peaceful quality he had even in the middle of the almost constant flame wars this place used to have.

Oh well... life marches on...

Be well.

RIP indeed. A lovely chap.
His live report to us of 9/11 will be remembered.
We used to joke that he was the only one older than me ..... ouch!
Miss the old crowd, indeed!

It's hard to believe that shitapps like Facebook and Twitter have derailed Newsgroups. I don't use them and never will. And this place is dead, so RIP SHM too.

Not that we lack hot OFF TOPIC subjects and issues to bang about, for lack of Medieval news.

I don’t either, though I do use Reddit occasionally (mostly to discuss the Detroit Lions)
but that place is a minefield like all corporate social media nowadays, where one has
to be careful not to step on any toes or you’ll get the banhammer.

I keep hoping Usenet will enjoy a rebirth as people become sick of the ever growing
constraints that come with corporate social media but so far it hasn’t happened,
though Usenet does keep shuffling along.

+1 to that - Paul was always a class act though I had no idea he was
so old. (Gives me an objective to reach - only my grandmother made
that age though most of them made 80 in my family - exceptions being
the chain smoker who died of lung cancer at 71, another alzheimers at
79 and one who was run over by an RV at 71. Since I don't smoke I'm
not worried about following my grandfather who used to boast he was
born before the Wright brothers became famous and lived to see
Armstrong on the moon)

I first read something by Paul on talk.origins in the early 1990s. A complex posting on open and closed systems, entropy, Gibbs free energy, Helmholz free energy, it was written with such verve and energy that I was sure this was by a graduate student who had only recently learned this material and was still enthused with it. As Paul's first publications were in the early 1960s, I was off by thirty years.
