There has not been any arguing about climate change around here for a while. No need.

Remember 'Independence day'? Those city-size alien ships blocking the sky...

Think of space-ship skeptics on that day, and see by analogy what climate skeptics have today obscuring the havens.

Nice symmetry having Captain Kirk, who in Star Trek inspired people to seek jobs at NASA and Blue Origin, build a rocket, and send Kirk to space.

The 90 year old man came back transformed, trying to grasp at the profundity of what he had just felt. Seeing the Earth's atmosphere apparent fragility was highly emotional. He talks in the hushed sincerity of those who know what's coming.

This pandemic is like a war, many don't see it. We didn't give up half way our wars. Companies are closing office access again, and grab on to something because down the tube we go again, into probably another terrible year. I stopped counting, it's like 800K dead now or more, no matter who is president. The virus is beating us because it mutates faster than we can grow philosophically, in the department of personal liberty and actions that potentially harm others in the context of a global pandemic. If a virus was much more lethal than Covid there would be martial law and vaccinations would be mandatory, or placed in quarantine. Covid glides that zone of being lethal yet not inducing general panic. Smooth operator, if you let it.

they've had their children.

This is what makes ALS ("Lou Gehrig's disease") so devastating as if a

get it. Years ago I had a girlfriend whose mother had it so she had a
50-50 chance of getting it in the next 15-20 years. Never did find out
what happened to Judy so have no idea if she's suffered or not. Point
is that doesn't normally strike you till after age 40-45 which is
after most people who are going to be parents have had their tykes.

(There are now tests that show whether a particular person has the ALS
mutation or not and of course there are all kinds of 'should I or
shouldn't I take the test?" anxieties. The same is true of hemophilia
and I recently read a report about Tsar Nicholas' family which showed
that only 1 of his daughters was a hemophilia carrier - but she was
the one who had said she wanted a large family. Neither of these tests

Since one copy of a clotting factor gene is enough, and excess clotting factor is not a good thing,
a process called lyonization will sometimes inactivate one of the genes, or at least reduce it's output.

It is possible that if a woman is a carrier, the inactivated gene will be her good
gene for producing clotting factor. In this case the woman will bruise very
easily, and cuts will heal slowly. So some carriers do show signs of their
genetic problem, but not all. Thus it is possible to do more than speculate on
some cases of historical significance, even when other evidence is unavailable.

They don't mind the verbal abuse in return, and now all of a sudden they do.

Exhibit A is that I respect their threads and never post on topics they start, so our contrary opinions don't ruin their threads. To this day I don't disturb the peace in conversations they initiate, faintly hoping they will reciprocate, but it's their choice not to. It's like some kind of entourage, a pair of flies always stuck to my shit. I repeat, It must be awful to have no manners.
